Bye, Fall 2016

Bye, Fall 2016

Fall 2016 Simulcast season is over…so who were the winners and losers? Due to time constraints I dropped a lot more shows than I usually do…which means this post is mostly about the winners (or what I liked the most). In no particular order…

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

reality

One of my absolute favorite shows of the season. And I lost my shit when, in JoJo’s of all places, Rohan dares to say that the key to a great manga is “reality.” I still haven’t gotten over it (obviously). This one got a lot of discussion on the podcast and what we say often is that this is JoJo’s hitting its stride; a JoJo’s that’s at its best, most comfortable, and most outrageous and owning every minute of it.

DAYS

days-2

I don’t give two whits about soccer but Days won me over from the first episode and NEVER let up. Every week I was amazed at how invested I was in this show and how it sucked me in. The pacing was excellent and it had a great balance of drama/comedy/intensity/man-tears. And I will never get over the power of Daisuke Ono’s voice to score a goal. I feel like I should say more about it, about how great it is, how fun it is, how sporty it is…but just watch it!

Haikyu!!

haikyu-struggle

Speaking of magnificent sports anime with perfect pacing, there’s Haikyu!!. This third series was a bit shorter at only 10 episodes but those ten episodes were packed with…everything. I don’t think I’ve held my breath so much in my life. I might’ve teared up every episode. I’ve said since the beginning (and when recommending this show to people) that this is one of the most perfect sports anime I’ve ever seen…and I stick to that. It’s absolutely amazing. You can’t go wrong with this, unless you hate boys, awesome, and feelings.

haikyu-group

Uta no Prince-sama: Legend Star

love-love-love

Well, it was very UtaPri. And apparently we’re getting yet another season of it..?

Magic-kyun Renaissance

magic-kyun-photo

A bit sleepy at times but I felt like Magic-kyun did some new, twisty things with a generally trope-y genre. Of the idol/reverse-harem style anime this season, I think this was my favorite. I had several genuine laugh-out-loud moments and I really enjoyed how ridiculous it got at times.

Yuri!!! on Ice

on-ice

WHAT IS THERE TO EVEN SAY ABOUT THIS SHOW?! If you’ve watched it, you know it’s amazing. If you haven’t watched it, well, I’m sure you’ve heard it’s amazing and I can’t imagine what you’re waiting for. I loved a lot of shows this season and rewatched many, many episodes…but this is the show I rewatched the most. I have lost count at how many times I’ve seen each episode. I can’t talk about this anymore or I’ll cry.

banquet

Drifters

saint-germain

And for another show that I watched repeatedly…DRIFTERS. Because the manga comes out on a pretty slow schedule we were cautiously optimistic…and blown away. Drifters was absolute perfection, every episode, and I can’t wait for it to return…whenever that is…

nobunaga

Keijo!!!!!!!!

keijo

For a show that looks built on fanservice, Keijo!!!!!!!! was totally worth the watch. It was hilarious, over the top, and very well done and savvy all the way.

Occultic;nine

It was fast-paced with a feeling of chaos but everything seemed to fall in place at the end. I wasn’t as invested/involved in this series and was a bit relieved when it wrapped up.

Kiss Him, Not Me

kae

As a fan of the manga, I had high hopes for this one. However, like the manga…it had its ups and downs, its hilarious episodes and its kinda slooooow episodes. But I felt like the final episode ended on a high note reminiscent of the humor in the first few episodes and felt very true to the essence of the show.

khnm

Poco’s Udon World

poco

How can something be so heartwarming and yet heartbreaking all at the same time?! Although I was looking forward to this one, it was kind of a surprise for me. It was way better than I’d anticipated and I found myself looking forward to it every week. I thought it would be one of those “background shows” and instead I fell in love with it.

Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru

tr1

Naturally, I loved the Shinsengumi episodes/lean of Touken Ranbu. Since I don’t know anything about the game except its general premise, I wasn’t sure how much I’d like the anime. But it was a lot of fun and now I wish I could play the game. And name-dropping Hijikata will always pique my interest.

tr2

So that’s what ENDED this season…but don’t forget we have a few that are marching on, like:

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans

ibo2ibo

All Out!!

ohimesama

Nanbaka

uno

So there you have it! Pretty pared down from how I started the season…but now it’s time to make my picks for winter and overload my schedule once again!

What were your fall favorites? What did you drop, what did you keep? …And what can’t you wait to see this winter?

Spring 2016 Wrap-Up

I don’t usually drop a lot of shows but due to travels and life and all that, I ended up finishing far fewer shows than I started. So what the heck did I watch?

My Top 3
In no particular order, I felt the best shows of the Spring 2016 Season were…drumroll, please:

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (Diamond Is Unbreakable)JotaroI’d never be disappointed in you, Jotaro

I feel the same as Josuke’s mom on this one; I loved loved loved loved loved this show. (Or love love love love love, I guess, since it’s ongoing, not ended.) My criteria for the Top 3 Category was simply, “What shows do I look forward to every week? Which new episodes am I excited to watch?” I’ve absolutely loved every episode of Diamond Is Unbreakable so far and can’t wait for more…in fact, at the time of this post, I just finished episode 14 and in the famous words of Joseph Joestar: “OH MY GOD!”

Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamotosakamotodesuga.jpgIt was. It always is.

Seriously, haven’t you heard? This show is hilarious! I picked up the manga a while back and so was super excited when the anime was announced. It did not disappoint! The show reminds me a lot of the endearing absurdity of Cromartie High School. While JoJo’s is sometimes hard to recommend to people because it’s, well, BIZARRE…I feel like even though it’s outrageous, Sakamoto is more readily appealing. Though if listening to guys talk for minutes while nothing is really happening on screen (a la Gintama) isn’t something you can handle then maybe you’re not funny enough for this show.

My Hero Academiaaizawa.jpgI know, I know, we’re all saying the same thing: My Hero Academia was too good.

Again, this was one where I picked up the manga first and…was way excited about the anime. Guess what–I’m still WAY EXCITED ABOUT THE ANIME. The manga is fantastic and of course I recommend reading it but I felt the anime did a fantastic job of bringing it all to life. This happens to be my brother’s #1 pick of the season and he won’t shut up about how the story took a very overused concept and made it totally fresh and exciting. Plus Ultra!

Okay, so not everyone can be a winner. Aside from my Top 3, here are my other shows that I enjoyed…

Joker Gamejokergame.jpgQuite possibly my favorite line of the whole series.

I set the bar pretty high for this one. I loved the premise and the way it looked and the assortment of characters so I couldn’t wait to watch it. The first two episodes were great. I think I was just perpetually conflicted because I wanted to “get to know” the characters…but by the very nature of the show and the fact they’re spies and don’t even know each other, we can’t expect to get to know them. Their personalities are fluid and backgrounds contrived. I think that’s why I enjoyed the final episode so much and felt like that’s the episode I’d been after the whole time–because we finally got to see “inside” the character. But I also think that’s why it was chosen as the final episode. Despite my “desire for more while simultaneously realizing that would compromise the whole premise of the show itself”…I did enjoy it, would watch more of it, and would recommend it.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listlesstanakakun.jpgOf course it is.

I knew nothing going into this show aside from the pretty self-explanatory title. Yeah, I enjoyed the first episode but it is pretty sleepy, so I figured it’d be one of those “put on while trying to fall asleep” shows.  The problem with that was I didn’t fall asleep at all–I stayed awake just to watch it! It was such a goofy, simple, drowsy show but I ended up loving it. The pacing and dare I say boring? premise might not be for everyone but it really clicked with me. Okay, sure, the adorable bromance between Ohta and Tanaka didn’t hurt. I could probably watch another twelve episodes of Ohta taking care of Tanaka and packing him around.

Bungo Stray Dogsstraydogs.jpg

Like Joker Game, I was really excited about this one. I realized almost immediately that it was way goofier than I’d anticipated (I know we all associate Osamu Dazai with hilarity, right? …Right?) Kunikida immediately became my favorite simply by being one of my favorite voices (ahem, Ohta, above) but sometimes I had a hard time paying attention. I’m not sure I would’ve stuck with it except for I WANTED TO LIKE IT. I did enjoy the series, especially in the last couple episodes, and I think the next season with even more characters will be something to look forward to.

Assassination Classroom

It’s been a long haul for the octopus teacher assassin and those of us watching. It was nice to see a series that actually has a conclusion. And yes, I cried the last episode.

Super Lovers

I went from thinking this was incredibly stupid to can’t stand waiting for more all within the first episode. However, since I couldn’t wait for more, I ended up reading the manga and after that the anime wasn’t as interesting. I wanted to love it but I just didn’t care as much since I spoiled it for myself. But hey, it’s BL; I’ll take it.

I also finished The Lost Village because I kept expecting some bombshell or some deep revelation that would make the show worth watching. Didn’t happen. I want my time and brain cells back.

So that’s my spring! I have a ton of “wanna watch” shows on my list so my Summer 2016 post could be HUGE. Or I might have to whittle things down from the start…

What shows did you love? Which ones wasted your time? Are you excited about anything coming this summer? (ahem, BERSERK, ahem)

Spring 2016 Extravaganza

It’s that time again! After gorging myself on the season’s new shows, here’s what I came up with…

LOVE LOVE LOVE:

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable I was soooo excited for this one and it did not disappoint. At the time of this post we’re 3 episodes in and every time I get to the end I wish I could just watch the whole series.

Joker Game This is another of my highly-anticipated shows and I try to not just grin through the whole episode. I love the intellectual/espionage/historical aspects of it all; you want to pay attention to every little detail.

Bungo Stray Dogs While I thought this would be a bit more serious (I mean, I’ve never found Osamu Dazai to be particularly humorous) I’m pleasantly surprised with the goofy twist. I’d been really looking forward to this series and now that it’s here, I love it.

Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto Having read the manga, I couldn’t wait for this anime. Yes, it’s so stupid but so GREAT. It has kind of a Cromartie High School feel that I really love.

My Hero Academia I read the manga and love it but the hype for this show was nuts. However…it’s all good! The anime has done an excellent job so far. This is another one of those shows that makes me want to just watch more, more, more! after the episode ends.

Super Lovers My guilty pleasure. A few minutes into the first episode I really thought I wasn’t going to like it but now I’m addicted.

Okay, I’ll Probably Keep:

Kiznaiver This show also got quite a bit of hype…to the extent I almost didn’t watch it. But I liked it more than I thought I would so I’m hoping it surprises me/grows on me/something.

Ace Attorney I have never played these games but decided to watch the show anyway. Turns out, I really like it! I don’t even know why. This show may not qualify as one I “love love love” and I don’t feel compelled to pay attention the entire time, but it’s fun and easy and heck, now I’m thinking about trying the game(s).

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 It’s…a Gundam series. And as such, seems to take itself pretty seriously. But since Iron Blooded Orphans is over (for now?) I might as well fill the Gundam gap with this.

Twin Star Exorcists I tried getting into the manga and just…couldn’t. I thought maybe the anime would be better but it turns out I’m pretty bored with that too. I don’t know why this series doesn’t click with me; I usually enjoy this general premise. But for some reason I feel compelled to stick with it.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless This one came out of nowhere (for me) and I thought it would be way too boring but for some reason…I really like it. Admittedly, I’m only through the first episode so the premise might get old pretty fast but for now, I’m really liking Tanaka-kun…’s friend.

And you thought there is never a girl online? I thought the concept was great but simultaneously expected this to be really disappointing. Instead, the first episode was pretty funny to me. I’m still wary and expect it to go downhill quickly but for now I’ll just let it be what it is and enjoy it.

Endride I’ll admit that I was excited for this even though I expected it to be pretty dumb. And it is pretty dumb but I still kinda like it. Though I’m perpetually distracted by the fact that one guy is apparently missing the lower half of his shirt while the other guy always looks like his pants are on backwards.

Shonen Maid Judge all you want, I was looking forward to this one. It’s actually a lot cuter than I expected, even if it’s not as interesting as I’d hoped. I don’t mean that in any BL/pervy way (for once).

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress This show is…cinematic. It had a very “movie” feel to it. It also felt like a movie in terms of pacing, like it had plenty of time to explore the plot. Which is probably why it felt kind of boring to me at first –plus zombies aren’t really my thing– but by the end, I wanted to know what happened to the main dude and thought, “This might be pretty good.”

Maybe I Will, Maybe I Won’t…

Kumamiko I don’t know why but I thought this would be great. What’s not to love about a girl and a talking bear? Unfortunately it’s kind of boring so far. A girl and a talking bear…I feel like there’s so much wasted potential for hilarity…

Big Order Why did I pick this up? I feel like it should be better than it is. The premise/plot seemed interesting but the protagonist…comes off as kind of whiny and makes me want to hit him (and his sister). However, I did fall asleep before the end of the first episode so maybe I missed something that would actually make me like anyone in the show.

Hundred I was going to drop this but I keep watching it even though the princess-character’s boobs are horribly distracting in their weird defiance of gravity. Actually, I think the only reason I still watch is because of Emile.

The Lost Village I didn’t really know what to expect but the premise sounded interesting. Unfortunately I’m already to the phase of not liking/caring about any of the characters and being perfectly content if they all just kind of died. But maybe that’s what’s going to happen so I’ll keep going.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- I picked this up out of curiosity and ended up liking it more than I thought I would. Then I fell asleep in the second episode. The main character (I think he’s the main character–unless he perma-died while I was sleeping) was actually kind of endearing to me, which I didn’t expect. But I don’t know if I’ll see this one through to the end.

Flying Witch I don’t actually know why I picked this one up. But it’s kind of cute and sleepy and simple so far so I guess I’ll keep at it.

Dropped:

Bakuon!! I don’t know why but I actually feel a bit guilty for dropping it. There is nothing that interests me –cute girls or bikes– so I don’t know why I even watched the first episode.

Cerberus After two episodes I don’t even remember what this was about or why I thought I should watch it. Apparently I make impulsive random queue decisions.

There you have it…my too-long Spring Anime Evaluation. *collapses*

Things I Love

Because, I’m sure you’re just dying to know…here are the THINGS I LOVE right now:

Gintama OMG these manga chapters lately are just killing me! I can’t wait to see what each new chapter brings and I’m hoping against hope this arc will be animated someday. The latest chapter (ch 529) totally made me cry.

Fairy Tail Alright, the anime has been kind of slow lately with a pile of filler (though perhaps my favorite filler ep, which is actually not filler because it’s legit from the manga..? “413 Days” aired last week) but the manga is kind of blowing my mind and keeping me on edge wondering what’s going to happen next.

I’m sure it’s no surprise, but something else I LOVE is Kuroko’s Basketball!!! Every week I get so excited and wish I could just watch “Kuroko’s Basketball” forever.

otpI won’t lie; I “kyahhh!”ed when I saw this end card.

How about Durarara!! X2? Seriously, within three seconds of the opening each week, I think, “Man, I fucking love ‘Durarara.'” And I think that again probably every few minutes every episode. If there’s a lot of Shizuo, then I think it about every seven seconds. Love love love the opening (and the rest of the show, of course.)

Speaking of great openings…I think I could watch the Death Parade opening on loop for about an hour. I get so excited when it comes on. This show has been really fun and interesting so far. I knew nothing about it when I started watching but was hooked immediately.

Girls who end their sentences with “gau gau” and guys who end theirs with “Shabadadoo.” I never thought lesbian bears could be so entertaining…thank you, Yurikuma Arashi! (To this day, I randomly blurt out, “Bears eat people; that’s what bears do.”)

Or maybe I just love bears because I can’t get enough Polar Bear Cafe. I realize this isn’t a “new” show but I marathoned it recently and was so bummed when I ran out of episodes. I wanted to find the perfect screenshot to share but realized I’d just end up watching episode after episode and forget my original purpose… >_<

Of course I love Hak Yona of the Dawn/Akatsuki no Yona. Ever since reading the cast list before the show aired, I’ve been waiting this entire time for Suwabe-san Jae Ha (or is it Jeaha?) to show up. Now my life is complete. Jae Ha and Hak can just banter back and forth and kick ass indefinitely and I’ll be happy.

hakI couldn’t agree more, Jae Ha. He *is* perfect.

The Onibaku and Great Teacher Onizuka. Yes, I realize this is old news, but after watching the GTO anime I started looking for another fix and ended up reading “Shonan Junai Gumi” (aka “GTO: The Early Years”). Loved the shit out of it. So of course I had to continue with “14 Days in Shonan” and I’m reading “GTO: Paradise Lost” whenever a new chapter updates on Crunchyroll Manga. So lewd, so inappropriate, so toilet…so fucking awesome and funny and manly. On several occasions while reading, I hear Elfman’s voice in my head, “That’s a man!”

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, specifically any time Joseph yells, “Oh my God!” This is guaranteed to get a laugh from me no matter how many times he does it. This latest episode (episode 30) was a real treat because I think we got at least two “Oh My God!”s and even a “Holy shit!” I’ll be so sad when this anime is over.

OHMYGOD

Winter is…HERE!

It’s not a “new” title but I’m sooo glad JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is back. My life just didn’t have enough bizarreness in it otherwise. Welcome back, JoJo!

Aldnoah.Zero is also back…though I’m not sure how much I care. Sometimes I have a hard time staying awake during these episodes.

Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! started off with boys in a public bath. Sign me up! Seriously, though, this show is hilarious. I actually said, “What the hell?” out loud at least once and totally lost my shit during the transformation sequence. I absolutely love stupid stuff like this. And somebody please hurry and make a plush version of that wombat; I totally need one.

KanColle Cute girls aren’t really my thing and ships aren’t really my thing…but together they’re somehow interesting? I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would and plan to stick with it, at least for now.

Saekano – How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend I loved the whole setup for this. I have this weird feeling that ultimately I’ll be disappointed, but for now I’m enjoying the tongue-in-cheekness of it all.

Durarara!!x2 Yes yes yes! That’s all I have to say about that.

Assassination Classroom At first I was wary of the hype but I read the first volume of the manga & really enjoyed it. The first episode of the anime was true to form and I have high hopes.

Yurikuma Arashi cute girls, cute bears, cute girls bears eating girls…it’s Yurikuma Arashi, the name kinda says it all. However, in total non-yuri fashion, I’d say it’s worth it just to hear Junichi Suwabe say “sexy.” 😉

Death Parade I had no preconceptions going in but the opening theme was a great sign of things to come. Totally morbid, totally fascinating.

…and last but not least…

KUROKO’S BASKETBALL *flail flail flail* Okay, I’ll admit, I was getting slightly irritated with all the recap in the beginning and thought, “This whole thing better not be a recap episode…I don’t need a recap, I’ve rewatched a bunch recently to get ready for season three!” But then the ball got rolling (no pun intended)…and I’m just so happy I feel like my heart is about to burst. I could cry, I’m so glad Kuroko no Basuke is back. And of course I laughed at the end theme and thought, “What, are they intentionally trying to give the fujoshi nosebleeds?” But it’s all good. I’m just so, so happy. 🙂

Not-So-Endless Summer 2014

Okay, I apologize for the uncreative title. I was so excited, not for the end of the Summer Season, but to tell you about my two favorites of the season…only to read that I’m totally not special and that pretty much everybody loved “Barakamon” and “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun”/”Gekkan Shoujou Nozaki-Kun.”

So if you haven’t seen them, I highly recommend “Barakamon” and “Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun.” I laughed every episode and rewatched (and re-laughed) every episode at least twice.

Now, for my other winners of the summer!

Hunter x Hunter: WAHHHHH! I’m so sad it’s over, though I couldn’t think of a better place to end it. I can only hope that sometime during my lifetime we’ll see the next arc animated. Though perhaps I should just be glad if the Dark Continent Arc is ever finished in the manga, let alone makes it to animation..? (Also, the link goes to the crunchyroll page, but “Hunter x Hunter” is now available on Netflix too.) I do realize this might not actually count as a “Summer Season” anime since it started…wayyy before this summer. But it’s over now and I had to mention it.

Free!: Yeah, okay, I wish I was cool enough to *not* like “Free!”. I wasn’t even that excited about it when the second season started. But I resisted for all of about two seconds before I was sucked back in to the world of emotional but muscular swimming boys. Rin’s stripper-cop-dance in the ending theme made me smile every week. I can’t lie–I’ll miss “Free!”. And Makoto’s back muscles.

Haikyu!!: One of the most tight, well-done sports anime I’ve seen. I think after every episode, I said, “Wow, that was perfect.” Sports anime distilled to its purest essence. I hope we get more of this and I’d love to see the manga in English (sorry, I don’t read Japanese).

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you know I fuckin’ LOVE “JoJo’s.” I can’t wait til this comes back in January. (I almost didn’t include it because it’s not really “ending” this summer, but I had to say SOMETHING about “JoJo’s”)

Samurai Jam-Bakumatsu Rock: I know right now people are screeching (assuming anyone reads this, anyway). “Bakumatsu Rock, a ‘winner’ of the summer?!” To me, YES. Is it stupid? YES. Over-the-top? YES. Possibly the most ridiculous thing ever? YES. Did I love the shit out of it? TOTALLY YES. (I think I might’ve said this last time?) Plus, the last 30 seconds or so gave me one thing I waited all series for, just *hoping* it would make it after seeing the character design somewhere.

Black Butler: Book of Circus: I absolutely loved this and thought it was very well done. The opening, the ending, and everything in between was delicious sinful one hell of a Black Butler anime. Hehe.

Space Dandy: I know a lot of people got irritated with the randomness of “Space Dandy” but I loved it. The final episode was fantastic. I’ll miss “Space Dandy” a lot–Junichi Suwabe’s voice, the nonsense, the weird musical numbers, Meow’s social media addiction, the great boobs vs butt debate…but I find comfort in knowing that no matter what, Space Dandy is a dandy in space.

Maybe Not Winners But Shows I Really Liked:

Hamatora: I loved it, I didn’t, then I loved it again, then I didn’t. Then shit got crazy at the end and I thought, “This is what I’ve been waiting for.” “Hamatora” was far from perfect, and maybe not even good, but I was pot-committed and glad I saw it through to the end.

Love Stage!!: I started the anime, then couldn’t get enough & started reading the manga, then went back to the anime…it’s great. BL might not be for everyone and I’m definitely no expert in the genre, but I really enjoyed “Love Stage!!”.

Nobunaga Concerto: The animation style took some getting used to but was totally worth it. I love pretty much everything Nobunaga/Sengoku Era but this show was just really fun and clever.

Sabagebu!: Cute girls playing survival games with cute guns…or…something? Whatever this show is, it’s hilarious!

I Don’t Even Know If I Liked Them But I Finished Them Anyway:

Blue Spring Ride: Would I watch it again? No. Would I read the manga? Yeah, probably. It wasn’t “bad”…just kind of a slow, generic shojo.

Captain Earth: I’m glad I finished it and was quite relieved it was over. I can see why people might like this show but I just couldn’t really get into it.

Terror in Resonance: I wanted this to be fantastic. It was “okay.” I think it had the potential to be “whoa!” but somewhere along the way fell flat. However, I did enjoy the final episode.

Aldnoah Zero: I was kinda ready for this to be over but now I’m curious to see what happens. Bring on Season 2!

Okay, I think that’s all the endings for the summer…

…now onto Fall Season 2014!

Summer Season Update

What I LOVE Right Now:

Fairy Tail (Season 2): Yes, I do think the manga has better pacing but I still look forward to “Fairy Tail Friday!” Fairy Tail is, and likely always will be, one of my favorite anime/manga.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: I can’t say enough about how awesome this show is. I had no experience with the manga so every week as part of “Fuck Yeah Fridays” I can’t wait to see what the hell JoJo’s is going to do this episode. Joseph yelling, “Oh NO!” is quite possibly the highlight of my week.

Hunter x Hunter: This show is amazing. Incredible. Life-changing, even? Is the author fucking with your head most of the time? Absolutely. But I think wondering how Togashi is going to troll us this week is what makes it fun. Maybe I’m just a masochist.

Naruto Shippuden: Okay, I was originally going to downgrade this to the “What I Like Right Now” category but as I watch the latest episodes I’m reminded of what’s going on in the manga right now and I realize how much I still love the series. Sure it may be cheating to think of it that way, but it qualifies as love-by-association.

Ace of the Diamond: I’m a sucker for sports anime and their baseball butts are fantastic. Things are in full swing (as they should be by episode 44) and we’re getting some great action and development. I’ve never enjoyed watching live baseball but apparently I love watching animated baseball! (By the way, go watch Princess Nine!)

Haikyu!!: So far I feel every episode has been perfect, which is pretty amazing. Even anime I love have an episode or two that are “weak” but after every Haikyu!! I just want to scream, “That was so good! That was incredible!” I hope I didn’t just jinx it.

Sailor Moon Crystal: I…don’t really know what to say about this show. I end up laughing because it feels like a parody of itself. Though there is a sense of nostalgia, I started watching thinking I am much more adult and cynical…and it took me all of half a second to realize I still have a crush on Tuxedo Mask. >_< I guess I’m ruined on real men forever… Ahem, that aside, I can’t help but look forward to every episode.

Free! (Eternal Summer): Yeah, I’ll say it: after the first series, I was happy with the ending and didn’t really think a second season was necessary. Then I ended up grinning/laughing/squeeing the entire first episode of Eternal Summer and surprised myself realizing how much I’d missed those swimming boys. “Free! Eternal Summer: now with twice the fanservice!” No complaints here. 🙂

Samurai Jam-Bakumatsu Rock: When I first read the description of this on Crunchyroll News I was ridiculously excited. Then my brother read the description and said, “Oh look, someone crawled into your brain and made an anime just for you.” Is this show stupid? Yes. Do I love it? YES. Did I just about die laughing during the bath house episode? YES YES YES. I love the shit out of this stupid show; I want it to go on forever.

Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun: I laugh my ass off every episode. This is definitely one of my favorites of the season. I feel like I should have more to say about it to explain how awesome it is but really, it’s just incredibly hilarious.

Love Stage!!: BL was never really my thing but this anime amused me from the beginning. Then I saw a tweet talking about how it was “no Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi” and out of curiosity I watched that (and ended up really liking it). So now I guess BL is my thing and I can’t wait to watch the latest Love Stage!! every week.

Hamatora (Season 2/Re:Hamatora): Things seem to be opening up and escalating which, to me, is Hamatora at its best. Let shit get crazy. **This was originally placed in the “What I Like Right Now” category, but after watching episode 6, it moved up.**

Space Dandy (Season 2): I loved the first season, I love pompadours, and I love Junichi Suwabe’s voice. The musical episode is one of my favorites.

Black Butler (Book of Circus): I didn’t really want to fangirl over Sebastian because that’s soooo predictable but every time I watch an episode (or read a volume of manga) I can’t help but think, “Sebastian is simply one hell of a…mmm!” So yes, despite my efforts, I’m (still) smitten with Sebastian and a total sucker for anything Black Butler-related. I had previously read the Book of Circus arc in the manga and the anime does not disappoint.

Barakamon: I cannot say enough about how fucking wonderful this show is. Definitely one of the best shows of the season and I’ve watched each episode at least twice now. I admit to being incredibly frustrated seeing the tweets of enjoyment from everyone else watching it while I was waiting for Funimation to get it streaming…but it was worth the wait. Love love love this show.

What I Like Right Now:

Blue Spring Ride: I want to love it but it’s still a little too slow-paced-awkward-glance-shojo-y for me to truly love it. I feel that way about several anime adaptations of shojo manga that I’ve seen (Kimi ni Todoke and Say I Love You come to mind). However, it is what it’s supposed to be (if that makes sense) and does a decent job in that respect.

Akame ga Kill!: I really like this show but I just don’t love it quite yet. I love it but I’m not in love with it? It’s funny yet gritty and the characters are interesting. Perhaps most important is the buff guy with a pompadour; that’s the easiest way to guarantee I’ll watch. Seriously, though, I think this anime will only get better (I haven’t read the manga) and wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually moves into the What I LOVE list.

Sabagebu!: This probably would’ve been in the What I LOVE list after the first episode or two but as of right now, I enjoy it but don’t really get excited about it. It is very funny, though, and I do recommend it.

Terror in Resonance: Yes, I started watching this because of the hype…and kept watching because it’s pretty good. It’s not my typical genre but it’s good to branch out once in a while and the whole show feels very “tight” and well-constructed.

What I’m Sticking With For Reasons Even I Don’t Know:

Captain Earth: Yes, I still watch this and still think Akari is the best character. I don’t particularly look forward to it and admittedly watch it out of a strange sense of obligation. I have enjoyed the last couple episodes the most and I am genuinely curious to see how it’ll all wrap up.

Argevollen: I just finished episode 7 and I think that’s the first episode I watched in one sitting without falling asleep. I love the character design, like the concept, but I end up getting so bored when I actually *watch* the show. I keep thinking if I stick with it things will pick up and suck me in. *fingers crossed*

Rail Wars: Do I like this show or just tolerate it? I don’t really know. For some reason, I thought it would be better than it is and while I understand boobs are important, all the big boobs seem just a little too big to the point of being distracting. Perhaps Boob Wars would have been a better name? I do like the secondary characters, though, so I’ll stick with it a little longer.

Magimoji Rurumo: I started this because of its association with Yowamushi Pedal (which I love). I continue it because…every episode I get bored and then one scene will end up grabbing my attention and renewing my interest. I can’t quit you, Magimoji Rurumo!

Aldnoah Zero: Like Argevollen, I liked the plot and the character design. And, like Argevollen, I have a bad habit of falling asleep during the episode. But I did stay awake for all of episode 6 and it (mostly) held my attention, so things are looking up!

Nobunaga Concerto: Truth be told, I’ll watch pretty much anything related to Nobunaga/the Sengoku Period. The animation style is a bit off-putting but at least things are starting to get a little more interesting.

Shonen Hollywood: Okay, I know why I started watching it (don’t we all know why I started watching it?) but it’s kind of emo and not very exciting. But hey, beautiful boys being emo is better than no beautiful boys at all…huhwhat?
