Woo! Summer 2015!

What new stuff did I watch? Will I keep watching it or did it suck? Let’s see!

GATE: I didn’t even know this show existed, no hype, knew nothing about it. But I wanted to watch Summer Season shows and this was one of the new ones on crunchyroll so I thought I’d try it. Originally I actually just planned to have it on in the background while I did some other stuff but then this happened in the first two seconds: “Is that…is that a normal-sounding, non-playboy-type Junichi Suwabe?!” Turns out, even his normal, non-sexified voice makes me drool! But I do want to say that while his voice was the hook for me to actually pay attention, I think the show has merit. The general concept reminds me of Outbreak Company, which I initially really enjoyed. So I’m excited to listen to see the next episode.

Aoharu x Machinegun: This was actually way more satisfying than I expected. I enjoy shows with survival game themes (maybe from my years paintballing?) and I love girls dressed as guys and I love hosts. So what was not to love about this? The show is nice to look at (both the boys and the art in general) and had a few laugh-out-loud moments. I’m actually kind of excited about this one.

Durarara!! x2 is BACK! Did I get goosebumps during the opening theme? Of course I did! No lag, no boring, just jumped right into Durarara goodness. Typical of my previous experiences with this show, I sat the whole time thinking, “Man, I fucking love this show.” SO HAPPY!

Rokka-Braves of the Six Flowers- I loved the look of this and the costumes and locations really drew me in. However, the prison scene was…way too talky and boring. I understand we need some context, some backstory, and this sort of characters verbally rehashing old lore thing is pretty typical for a fantasy/quest setting like this one. I do think that as we get more of the crew rounded up and meet more characters it’ll regain the initial oomph from the beginning. I hope.

Ushio and Tora this show has a very “shonen” feel from the very beginning and I mean that in the best of ways. Very upfront, relatively simple, and enjoyable.

SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist is pretty much exactly like it sounds and is totally hilarious. This is a show I was really excited about going into the summer season and the first episode does not disappoint.

GANGSTA my most-anticipated show of the season and OMG I LOVED IT! IT WAS PERFECT! The voices and the art and the voices and the music and the voices…totally wonderful and amazing and I can’t wait for more. I love the manga and it makes me so happy to see it get an anime.

Spring 2015 Wrap-Up

Sorry for the generic title but that’s what this is. Now, how the heck was the Spring 2015 season?!

Soooo, let’s just get this first one out of the way because not only is it the end of a season but it’s the end of a series and the END OF AN ERA AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY LIFE NOW. Of course, I’m talking about:

Kuroko’s Basketball Yes, I cried a little during the last episode. Kind of like this, only not as handsome:

aominetearsWhat is there to say?! I loved the series, I loved the season, I loved the finale…and now…

heartpainsMy week will be empty without a little Light & Shadow…and I don’t even have a “next season” to look forward to. But I’d like to thank Kuroko no Basuke for giving me so much enjoyment and making me cry on a regular basis.

Let’s talk about another finale: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Man, I loved this show. I would’ve taken more hilarious screenshots to commemorate the end of such a masterpiece but the whole series is pretty much screen-shootable. Shotable? Whatever. It was outrageous, bizarre, and hilarious. And even sad at times? Anyway, there is a lot of JoJo’s manga left so many of us are holding out hope for a continuation. *fingers crossed*

Now, for more series that ended this season:

Assassination Classroom was fun and I’d totally recommend it. That said, I am ready for a break from Koro-sensei.

I feel kind of weird talking about Blood Blockade Battlefront since it hasn’t actually ended yet..(at the time of this post)? I can’t imagine a final episode though that would make me change my recommendation (did I just jinx it?). I was really excited to see this animated and hear the characters voiced and would recommend the show for sure. But I’d also recommend the manga because I feel like you’re really missing out on some great character backstory & development by sticking to just the anime.

Even though I’m actually pretty glad that Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is over, I’d probably pick it up again if it came back with a second season. I kept falling asleep but I think the introduction of Hermes towards the end made it just interesting enough to reel me back in.

However, I’m just glad that PUNCH LINE is over. I wanted to love it, I wanted it to “wow” me and blow my mind and surprise all the nay-sayers and droppers but…no.

But I will miss Uta no Prince Sama * Revolutions! Mock me, say I have shit taste, I don’t care. I laughed so hard at how completely insane and ridiculous this final episode was. I didn’t expect a teaser for another season but I can’t wait! I thought maybe the musical reverse-harem glory days were over but I was WRONG. It’s all goofy and wonderful and made me laugh and I’m smiling as I’m writing this just thinking about how stupid and spastic this show is. Revolution!

I guess Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches still has one more episode left as I write this? Regardless, my advice is: read the manga.

Now, for a few shows that are sticking around:

I’m assuming The Heroic Legend of Arslan will continue on for seasons to come, carried by the strength of Daryun’s arms…huh? Okay, okay, it’s no secret that Daryun (and his arms) is my favorite thing about this show but it’s starting to surprise me with Arslan’s growth and the interactions between characters. Some of it was a bit sleepy at first but now I look forward to every episode. Bonus: I think the voice actors/acting is great; it’s worth watching just to listen to it.

What would this blog be without some Fairy Tail?! We’re starting the Tartaros Arc and getting into some good shit here! Woo! But hey, if you have a lot of spare time, totally marathon the manga because although the anime is getting pretty good right now, the current manga arc is *spoiler alert* INSANE!

Ace of the Diamond the boys are still playing baseball. And running. And sweating. And playing baseball. Miyuki’s still cute, Eijun’s still loud, Furuya’s still overheated. Of course I want Seido to win everything but I do have to say I love this new pompadoured-pitcher for Ugumori. Sometimes it’s hard getting attached to players on other teams knowing that you’re ultimately rooting for them to lose.

If you aren’t watching MY love STORY!!…then WHY NOT? It’s fantastic and hilarious. Watch it now! As a huge fan of the manga, I’ve been really happy with how the anime turned out.

OMG GINTAMA!!! I almost reflexively cry from happiness just to have this show back. I could gush about it all day. I’ve loved every episode and been totally happy with everything. And of course I’m so excited about all the arcs to come! Gintama is a difficult series (both manga & anime) in that I *want* to recommend it to everyone (as I’m sure is obvious by my use of caps and excessive exclamation marks whenever I talk about it) but it’s a show that while I think has something for everyone it isn’t actually…”for everyone.” That said, I do think it’s one of the overall best things I’ve ever seen/read.

So bring on the Summer Season! I can’t wait for Gangsta!
